Ancient Beliefs on Reishi
Ancient wisdom viewed Red Reishi not just as a physical remedy for sickness, but as a spiritual and energetic tonic that helps one live a long, balanced, and harmonious lifRed Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), traditionally known as Lingzhi in China and Mannentake in Japan, has been revered for over 2,000 years as the "Mushroom of Immortality" or "Divine Mushroom". In ancient TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), it was classified as a "superior herb"—a substance that promotes longevity, vitality, and overall health without side effects when consumed regularly.
The "Shen" Tonic: Calming the Spirit
In Daoist and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Red Reishi is classified as a premier Shen tonic.
- Shen translates to "spirit" or "consciousness," representing emotional balance and mental clarity.
- Traditional Use: Reishi was used by Taoist monks and sages to calm the mind, support a peaceful state of mind, and promote deeper meditation.
- Targeted Conditions: Reishi was employed to treat "knotted hearts," which in TCM refers to emotional distress, anxiety, and insomnia.
Nourishing the "Three Treasures" (Jing, Qi, and Shen)
Ancient wisdom views Reishi as a "Supreme Protector" that harmonizes the entire human constitution by nourishing the three foundational energies of life:
- Jing (Essence): Supports reproductive and constitutional vitality.
- Qi (Life Force): Boosts metabolism and physical energy.
- Shen (Spirit): Reishi nurtures mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It is thought to bring the body back to its natural state of balance (homeostasis).
"Immortal" Life and Longevity
Reishi earned its nickname as the "Mushroom of Immortality" because ancient practitioners believed it could prolong life and prevent aging.
- Vitality: Reishi was considered to make the body "light" and agile, preventing the degradation of physical vitality, and was believed to nourish all five Yin organ systems (heart, lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys).
- Historical Usage: Reishi was so rare that it was once reserved exclusively for emperors and nobility.
Usesof Reishi in Ancient Medicine
- Heart & Blood: Reishi was used to strengthen cardiac function, improve circulation, and alleviate palpitations.
- Respiratory Health: Traditionally Reishi was used to dispel phlegm, stop coughing, and treat asthma.
- Liver Support: Reishi was known for its detoxifying properties, protecting the liver from damage.

This information is presented to give context as to how Traditional Forms of Medicine - such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Traditional Tibetan Medicine (TTM), Ayurvedic Medicine and Shamanic Indigenous Traditions all over the Earth - developed and perfected over hundreds to thousands of years to see what did and did not work, viewed and used this natural substance in their Healing Traditions. Trial and error over lengthy periods of time is a perfect example of the Latin term Scientia “to know.”
